This CD has the advantage of more modern recording techniques since it was recorded in the 1990's, but the older music transferred from vinyl to CD is also quite pleasing to hear. I purchased it because I liked the Robert Shaw Chorale's Christmas albums, but to me this later group of singers sounds just as inspiring. With the passing of time one can appreciate the old carols more deeply as well their exceptional performers. This is some of the most beautiful Christmas music I own. It is all sung a cappella, proving that the human voice is as good as any instrument in conveying the message and spirit of the carols.
I would recommend this to anyone who appreciates good arrangements or good mucis. This is a wonderful recording of many of the carols and holiday songs that I remember from my college choral experiences and also listening as a child.
If you want to hear Christmas choral standards in all their glory, no disappointment here - beautiful men's chorus version (original) of Beibl's Ave Maria, and the treble voices also get play in the Ceremony of Carols. You simply cannot go wrong with this wonderful collection from a disciplined and masterfully-led chorus.
A cappella music is difficult to sing and the Robert Shaw Chamber Singers do an amazing job of it.Enjoy this music at anytime of the year as many of the songs aren't seasonal (such as Alleluia). (And, yes, I sing along although I've forgotten some of the lyrics and parts). Many others are seasonal but it doesn't make any difference, so just enjoy. I sang many of these songs in public high school in the late 60's. I enjoyed singing them then, and I enjoy listening to them now.
I played it all during the holidays. The quality is excellent and the price was great. I adore choir music. I love this CD. I have enjoyed Robert Shaw chorale for 40 years.
